Why has Digital Marketing leapt to the top of the agenda?

Simple … Reach. Getting access to a qualified audience who are searching for specific products is the main reason why marketeers live in the digital universe. It’s also far more controllable and ultimately digital marketing is the only modern-day and affordable way of having a direct channel to market. Developing this direct distribution channel means you’re creating opportunities to own the customer from the outset. The consumers’ growing thirst for technology and the growth in mobile phone usage is taking digital marketing into a new era.

Cheaper smart-phones will translate into higher device saturation in the consumer market. Better phones, faster data speeds means more people surfing on their phones with enhanced browsing experiences. However, just because these consumers are using their mobiles to do more stuff, m-commerce (mobile commerce) each industry will be finely segmented to locations and brands that support the profile of the m-commerce user.

I think the rise of social media is particularly interesting. For example, our Facebook marketing strategies differ greatly to that of paid search tactics. Knowing how to engage and interact using each channel to market is key. Search is a tactic for when you want to gain engagement from someone who already knows that they want to buy. Social media on the other hand is a tactic that can align a product with an intent that doesn’t currently exist or by peer recommendation of an experience with a property or brand.

I recently read a blog by someone who used their smartphone on a trip to Washington DC – Here is what she said:

I have traveled occasionally to larger cities — namely New York City and D.C. — since I was a kid. But earlier this week, for the first time in my life, I traveled to a big city with a smartphone (specifically, a Droid Incredible). And I couldn’t have been more satisfied.

Having a smartphone during an adventure to a large, relatively unknown city can be a life-saver or, at the very least, a trip-saver. For example, I used my phone in a few different ways during my two-day trip.

 1. Looked up the Metro map (and other important maps).

This one is obvious. Having ridden the NYC subway on multiple occasions, the London Underground a few times and the DC. Metro once or twice before the trip, I consider myself familiar with how they operate, although certainly not an expert. But those initial moments in the Metro when we couldn’t find directors or a map are stressful. Luckily, my trusty smartphone was there to help Kevin and I find our way to downtown DC from Arlington!
